Counselling Myths
Myth: Counselling is talking about feelings and nothing changes.
Fact: Whole Life Counselling members work from a Solution Focused perspective. Solution Focused Therapy focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on the problem(s) that made them to seek help. The approach does not focus on the past, but instead, focuses on the present and future. We believe that you are the expert in your life and that with a little assistance and guidance you will find the answers you are looking for within yourself. You do have the power to make the changes in your life you desire and deserve. Sometimes all you need is an objective person to listen so you can make clear goals. Whole Life Counselling can give you the tools and skills to make your goals happen.
Myth: Needing a counsellor means you are weak or incompetent, people will make fun of me.
Fact: Physical and emotional wellness and personal development is important. You are not alone in wanting less stress and more happiness in your life. That isn’t a sign of weakness but a search for a better life. Whole Life Counselling can help you reach these goals.
Myth: Counselling is not worth the money.
Fact: We at Whole Life Counselling believe that you cannot be healthy by putting your own happiness on the back burner. Invest in yourself and your relationships now and live your best life for you, your children, and your children’s children. There is often support through your extended health coverage.
Myth: The counsellor will find out something awful about you and judge you, that your secrets will become public.
Fact: Whole Life Counsellors are highly trained professionals who belong to the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. As members of BCACC, we have sworn to uphold the BCACC Code of Ethics that requires us to treat others with dignity and respect and to keep client information confidential.
Myth: No one can understand your experience.
Fact: Whole Life Counselling staff members have many years of lived experience of our own. Combined with the stories of the challenges and triumphs of our past and present clients we think we can understand and empathize with what is going on for you and can help you to come to terms with it in whatever way that makes sense to you.
If you’ve tried to solve the problem yourself but it still doesn’t feel right, maybe all you need is some objective feedback on what other possibilities might be for achieving your goals. Contact Whole Life Counselling today.
